Florence Pugh plays Lib Wright in the soon-to-be released feature. The adaptation, based on Emma Donoghue’s Room, is Netflix’s first project both set and filmed in Ireland.

Florence Pugh is expected to amaze in this new psychological drama. Set in Ireland in the year 1862, Lib Wright is an English nurse who is called out for duty to investigate women miraculously surviving through months of famine. The ever-old battle between science and religion is back. The Wonder is crafted by Chilean director, Sebastián Lelio, who’s previous work includes Gloria and A Fantastic Woman. Lelio worked alongside both Donoghue and Alice Birch in order to produce the screenplay.

The trailer only increases tensions, as we see Kila Lord Cassidy play the chilling role of young 11-year-old girl Anna. Anna has survived for four months of complete starvation, through nothing other than seemingly hope, religion, and ‘manna from heaven.’ Nothing is better than a film inspired by true stories, and The Wonder does just that, by dabbling in the tales of the nineteenth-century Great Famine.

Lelio’s masterpiece was previously showcased at the Telluride Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival and San Sebastian Film Festival. However, all eyes are on England ahead of the Headline Gala premiere at London Film Festival on 7 October. Guests such as Pugh, Lelio, and Donoghue are expected to attend.

The Wonder will appear in Irish cinemas on 2 November, followed by its full release on Netflix on 16 November.
