The Great Gatsby // F. Scott Fitzgerald
Gatsby is simply trying to achieve his American dream, however Fitzgerald shows that it is an impossible fantasy – even for this enigmatic character. Fitzgerald uses the novel to convey his disgust for the society that he lived in, which mirrors how I often feel about modern-day society. It made me think twice about an ever-growing gap between the classes that, before The Great Gatsby, I remained ignorant to. I was also enlightened about the destructive side of love. Before reading about Gatsby and Daisy’s flawed love affair I was a hopeless romantic, and to an extent I still am, however now I’m less blind to a darker side of love I hadn’t explored through literature before.
