Oliver Twist // Charles Dickens
The first time I read this novel it took me about two months and a lot of confusion; I was ten and probably not ready to take on the works of Dickens. Having recently watched the musical and found the novel in the school classroom library I felt ready and prepared to read the book that inspired the film. No one stopped me and for that I am grateful, for Oliver Twist will always remain special in my heart as the first classic I read but didn’t quite understand.
Having re-read the novel a few years later, with a deeper understanding of the workhouse and the time period, I finally understood the world Dickens had a created. Oliver Twist is almost a fairy tale as Oliver remains good-hearted throughout and his acquaintances fall to the evils that tempt them. There is good within a world of evil, sometimes you just have to look.
