Music Video Review: Summertime // FLO

Last week, British girl group FLO invited everyone to join in on their extremely fun summer holiday via a brand-new music video for ‘Summertime’ — the third track off the group’s stellar debut EP, The Lead.

Directed by Saorla Houston, the visuals follow the trio’s members — Jorja Douglas, Stella Quaresma, and Renée Downer — as they embark on a trip from their home in London to Greece.

At its core, ‘Summertime’ beautifully ties in all the key elements of an unforgettable summer: letting your hair down, enjoying the sunshine, and making the most out of every single day together with your closest friends. “Wanna dance to the beat ’til I pass out, hey / I’m tryna kick it with my ladies,” Renée excitingly reveals just before the first chorus.

Just like the title of the track suggests, the feel-good music video is full of glee and excitement. Some of the shots see Houston’s directorial vision embrace the home video-slash-vlog approach, allowing the girls to self-document their adventures abroad.

Such a creative direction takes the viewer on a trip down memory lane; with a sense of reminiscing one’s very own summer ventures, especially anywhere from the late ‘90s to early ‘00s. In fact, that’s where FLO’s sound seems to take its flight from — the revival of the 1990s-2000s R&B; ‘Summertime’, similarly to the previous singles ‘Cardboard Box’ and ‘Immature’, encapsulates that.

With a widely-acclaimed debut extended play under their belt, FLO is destined for success; their talent is simply undeniable. And it’s interesting to see what direction they take next.

But, as for now, may they enjoy their well-deserved holiday abroad.
