Avengers: Age of Ultron
Avengers: Age of Ultron sees the return of our favourite Marvel superhero ensemble, as they team up once again to kick ass and save mankind from a sinister AI threat. In the pursuit of peace, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr) and Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) attempt to create an artificial intelligence that will essentially do their job; i.e: saving the world. Unfortunately, this backfires and the malevolent Ultron (James Spader) springs to life. Born with a confused, juvenile sense of disdain for humankind, Ultron believes that the only way to fix the Earth and all it’s problems, is to first eradicate humankind. Pitted against this robotic megalomaniac, the Avengers must come together once again to save the world – which is a task only made harder by the powerfully divisive talents of the Maximoff twins (Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen).
As you’ve no doubt heard, the film has caused some controversy for it’s arguably sexist treatment of Black Widow’s character, as well as Joss Whedon’s canon-destroying attempts to put Scarlett Johansson’s badass heroine in romantic cahoots with Banner… but there are some saving graces. For one thing, the (non-romantic) chemistry between the cast is utterly infectious, and delightful to watch as they all riff off of each other. Spader’s mo-cap/vocal performance as Ultron is also incredibly effective – as is Paul Bettany’s scene-stealing portrayal of The Vision. And there are also some great set pieces, with the Hulkbusting scene being especially cool. Though it isn’t as note-perfect as the first film, this is still an amazing effort from Marvel, that will no doubt entertain the majority.
