The latest act to feature on NPR’s ‘Tiny Desk (Home) Concert’ is Miley Cyrus, with her rendition of Mazzy Star’s ‘Fade Into You’. The singer also performed ‘Prisoner’ and ‘Golden G-String’–the closing track from her new album Plastic Hearts.
Donned in a zebra print vest, fur coat and leopard print trousers, Miley lounges on a purple bed with pink satin covers. The space is reminiscent of a tiny childhood bedroom, complete with posters haphazardly taped on the walls and an electric guitar resting in the background. A fluffy cowboy hat and sunglasses complete the look and this Tiny Desk session could easily be a teenage Miley practicing in her room.
Close-up 90s-esque VHS visuals and Miley’s signature vocals put a modern spin on this song, taken from Mazzy Star’s 1993 album So Tonight That I Might See. The singer also keeps to the original dream-pop soundscape, honouring Hope Sandoval and late co-founder David Roback.
Cyrus posted a snippet of her performance on her instagram with the caption, “a stranger’s heart without a home”–a lyric from the song. The performance could perhaps be a tribute to the band’s co-founder, David Roback, who passed away earlier last year, aged 61.
Previously during the pandemic, Miley has covered tracks from the likes of Blondie, The Velvet Underground, The Cardigans, The Cranberries and more.
Late last year, Cyrus sang ‘Just Breathe’ by Pearl Jam during MTV’s Backyard Session concert and even won the approval of Courteny Love through her cover of Hole’s ‘Doll Part’. Cyrus has teased that a Metallica covers album is on the way.
