Matthew Robinson has signed on to write Rogue Squadron, a Patty Jenkins-directed Star Wars movie currently in development.

Robinson already has experience with blockbuster cinema, having rewritten the script for the Tom Cruise sci-fi vehicle Edge of Tomorrow. His other credits include Love and Monsters, Dora and the Lost City of Gold, and a joint writing and directing role with Ricky Gervais on The Invention of Lying.

Exact details about the new project remain scant on the ground at this stage. Lucasfilm have stated that the story “will introduce a new generation of starfighter pilots as they earn their wings and risk their lives in a boundary-pushing, high-speed thrill-ride, and move the saga into the future era of the galaxy.”

Director Patty Jenkins has given more specifics, stressing that the Rogue Squadron movie will be an original piece not wholly based on the video games series and novels of the same name, but informed by them.  In an interview with IGN, she said “we’re doing something original with great influence from the games and the books. There’s a lot of things being acknowledged and understood about the greatness of all of those things, but yes, it’s an original story and I’m so psyched to do it.”

With the Skywalker Saga having been completed with The Rise of Skywalker, the future of the Star Wars franchise on the big screen is set to splinter off into multiple different directions. Though no spin-off/anthology film has been released since Solo bombed back in 2018, a number are now being worked on. Those include Rogue Squadron, as well as an untitled Taika Waititi project. Most significant as far as the start of a new ‘saga’ is concerned could be the trilogy that’s being developed by Rian Johnson, director of The Last Jedi.

Star Wars: Rogue Squadron is set to be released on 22 December 2023.
