The Lyric Hammersmith Theatre has released their new line up of productions for the 2024/25 season.
Some old favourites are being given new life in the upcoming season. The Olivier Award-winning play Our Country’s Good, which was last seen in 2007, is to be staged again. Artistic Director Rachel O’Riordan will be directing the upcoming London production of Timberlake Wertenbaker play. Performances will run from 5 September to the 5 October 2024.
Up next, the ground-breaking civil rights drama A Raisin in the Sun has been freshly adapted and co-produced with the Leeds Playhouse and Nottingham playhouse ready for its UK tour, ending at the Lyric in October this year. The show is about a Black family facing challenging times in the south of Chicago following the death of their father. The play has tackled themes of segregation and racism since its debut in 1959 and continues to be relevant to this day. Written by Lorraine Hansberry, the production will be taken under the directorial wing of Tinuke Craig.
As we approach the Christmas season, writer Sonia Jalaly and director Nicholai La Barrie are back, bringing some magic into the Lyric with this year’s pantomime, Aladdin. After their massive success with Jack and the Beanstalk in 2022, make sure you get your ticket for your magic carpet ride this panto season.
Finally, to end the 2024/25 season, Play On! the brand-new major touring musical will be hitting the Hammersmith stage. The jazz musical is based on the Shakespeare play, Twelfth Night. Directed by Michael Buffong and featuring Duke Ellington’s timeless music, the show will make its London Debut on the 28 January 2025 at the Lyric theatre. This will be a co-production between the Talawa Theatre Company and the Liverpool Everyman, along with many others.
The For the Culture: Celebrations of Blackness festival is making its return on the 24 October 2024 following its success in 2022. Over the three-day period, there will be a series of events featuring music, art, workshops, food, and exhibitions, creating a space for Black British creatives to come together and celebrate with the community.
