Luca Guadagnino, director of Call Me By Your Name and upcoming coming-of-age TV series We Are Who We Are, has revealed his next project will be a documentary about the renowned Italian shoe designer Salvatore Ferragamo.

Titled Salvatore Ferragamo, Shoemaker of Dreams, the film will follow the designer as he honed his craft in Bonito, Italy at the age of just nine, to Hollywood, where he became head shoe designer for the silent movie stars.

Ferragamo was one of the most innovative designers of his age, experimenting with unusual materials like crocodile skin. When Italy suffered from closed trade with other nations in the 1940s, he took inspiration from historical designs, ultimately inventing the cork wedge sandal.

Ferragamo died in 1960 at the age of 62, but the brand he left in the care of his family remains a benchmark for shoe designers worldwide.

Salvatore’s son, Ferruccio, expressed his family’s excitement at the news: “We were very happy to know that the film about my father’s life would be presented at the Venice Film Festival. It’s an honour for me and my whole family that a director of the calibre of Luca Guadagnino is interested in our family history, adapting it for the big screen.”

Luca Guadagnino is also working on an adaptation of the gangster classic Scarface and a narrative film adaptation of the documentary Scotty and the Secret History of Hollywood.
