Billy Boyd and Dominic Monaghan, better known as on-screen besties Merry Brandybuck and Pippin Took from The Lord of the Rings, are launching a podcast about the film series.
Fans of the film series will know from their on-screen performances and off-screen behind-the-scenes featurettes that these two are known for their banter. Boyd and Monaghan plan to bring this to their new podcast, The Friendship Onion, as they reflect on the films that made their career. In the podcast, the pair will also dive into current pop culture and test Lord of the Rings fans’ trivia knowledge. It has also been hinted that other members of the cast may make appearances. Given how tight knit they all are — they even have matching tattoos — this comes as no surprise.
The podcast, produced by Kast Media, is set to launch across Spotify and other streaming services on 18 May, with a YouTube simulcast to accompany it. It will release episodes weekly. Colin Thomson, CEO of Kast Media, said, “We couldn’t be more excited to bring the comedic genius of this duo to podcasting. Fans were introduced to the quick wit and fun banter of this pairing through The Lord of the Rings films, but this podcast will demonstrate how far beyond that origins story their boundless energy and interest stretches. We can’t wait to start peeling back the layers of this friendship onion.”
Both Monaghan and Boyd announced the news with their usual humour. Monaghan said: “I am contractually obliged to make a glowing comment here in regards to the podcast Billy and I are making together. This is proving difficult as Billy has abducted me and is holding me for ransom to the price of 44 bananas. Please, send bananas.”
Meanwhile, Boyd wrote: “Dom took a little persuading, it’s true, but this podcast is going to rock. He is such a joker, you have to love Dom. Ha….but you also have to love bananas, so….yes, send bananas.”
The pair also reunited last year alongside the rest of the cast, as well as director Peter Jackson, writer Phillipa Boyens, and composer Howard Shore, as part of Josh Gad’s Reunited Apart series.
