Live Review: Everything Everything // O2 Academy, Liverpool, 05.04.22

The crowd falls silent as blue strobes set Liverpool’s O2 Academy alight, a stark contrast to Everything Everything’s white outfits, only to launch into an exhilarating and energetic set. Kicking off with ‘Teletype’, the crowd instantly got behind the infectious sound.

Roaring through crowd favourites ‘Cough Cough’, ‘Can’t Do’ and ‘Kemosabe’, the hyper atmosphere only continued to grow, as the crowd forgot their worries and let themselves enjoy the wonders of live music. As always, Jonathan Higgs’s tongue-twisting speed-lyrics shine, so much so the crowd try (and fail) to replicate throughout the set — only adding to bubbling excitement in the venue.

Whilst there’s no denying old tracks go down well, new tracks ‘Jennifer’ and ‘Pizza Boy’ garner a warm reception from the crowd. Of the new tracks, though, it is ‘Bad Friday’ that plunged the crowd into a frenzy of chaotic dancing limbs (so much so you in fact forgot it was in fact a Tuesday night!). It’s rare for a band to sustain such energy throughout a performance, but the Manchester indie outfit do not stop (or if they do, it’s only to get the crowd clapping or shouting along with them). It’s this energy that easily makes Everything Everything one of the best bands to see live.

The band rounded off their set with guaranteed crowd pleaser ‘Spring/Sun/Winter/Dread’ and a new single ‘I Want A Love Like This’, a high energy anthem that had everyone in the room dancing. The set was completed with three of the band’s classic songs, the upbeat ‘Violent Sun’, the drum-heavy ‘Distant Past’ and ‘No Reptiles’, proving the band know exactly what makes a crowd tick.

There’s a slight irony to it all, really, how a band who have made their name singing about the world and it problems can make a crowd take a step back from all the chaos going on, both in their lives and in the wider world, and truly enjoy the wonder of live music after missing it for so long.
