HarperCollins’s Little Big Book Club, which is facilitated in partnership with the National Literacy Trust (NLT), is being rolled out to 65 schools across the UK after a successful pilot last year.
The project is set to see HarperCollins donate more than 3,250 books to educational institutions in lower-affluence areas of the country, such as Manchester and Doncaster.
Five students from each school will be chosen to select four books from a list of 25 titles. These children will be picked with the project aim in mind: fostering a love of reading in children from low socio-economic backgrounds by providing access to books where they wouldn’t under normal circumstances. Students who are able to read but don’t necessarily do so for pleasure will be prioritised.
The NLT are an independent charity who work with schools and under-privileged communities to give children the literacy skills to succeed in everyday life.
Last year, they supported the literacy of 700,000 children in 6,492 schools who were out of education due to the pandemic and couldn’t access standard digital learning. They also distributed 575,643 books, magazines, and writing resources to the UK’s poorest communities during lockdown.
