Les Misérables is returning to the West End nearly seven months after it closed down due to lockdown.

The production, which has won multiple awards, will take place at the Sondheim Theatre in Shaftesbury Avenue from the 5th December, lasting six weeks.

The announcement was made on ITV’s Britain’s Got Talent, where cast members from Les Misérables, The Phantom of the Opera and Mary Poppins performed a musical number.

The news comes as Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg’s production celebrates its 35th birthday as a musical.

Tickets for the production have been on sale since 14th October, with the theatre ensuring its audience will be socially distanced.

The production will star Matt Lucas and Michael Ball and comes as alongside the announcement that pantomime will return to the West End.

From the 13th to the 15th November, the casts of four of London’s biggest shows – Wicked, Mamma Mia, Come from Away and Dear Evan Hansen – will return to the West End in a The Show Must Go On! Live at the Palace Theatre.

The theatre owner Sir Cameron Mackintosh stated that “I can’t tell you how emotional this is for me and for all of us.”
