If you’re looking for something terrifying in the lead up to Halloween this year, perhaps your best option is going to be Lazarus Theatre’s new adaptation of Thomas Middleton and William Rowley’s The Changeling. Not often staged, this modern production promises to have you shaking in your seat.
Set in the underbelly of a sophisticated, male-dominated society, The Changeling revolves around a strong, passionate woman who defies societal expectations in a disastrous way. In trying to get out of one dangerous relationship, Beatrice Joanna falls into another with her sadistic servant, De Flores. Their story is not a romantic one; it’s one full of death and desire, madness and terror.
Award-winning Lazarus Theatre will create a new version of The Changeling that taps viscerally and dynamically into modern fears of isolation and toxic relationships. It’s going to be gory, it’s going to be creepy, and it’s going to offer the audience a truly immersive theatrical experience that they won’t soon forget.
Director Ricky Dukes said: “Middleton and Rowley’s The Changeling is one of, if not, the best tragedies of the English Renaissance. It packs a punch, is entirely unapologetic, gutsy and full throttle, gloriously gory and theatrically daring. We can’t wait to return to Southwark Playhouse where we are transforming the auditorium into a Mad Men inspired in-the-round supercharged bunker. Things will definitely get messy. It’s going to be quite the ride.”
The Changeling runs from Thursday 28 September – Saturday 28 October 2023 at Southwark Playhouse.
