And just like that… the impossible has seemingly become a reality. Yes folks, Kim Cattrall will be returning to the Sex and the City universe in the second season of And Just Like That… as announced by Variety this past Wednesday. While she isn’t going to be a part of the foursome that we all know and love, a brief cameo at the end of the series is on the menu.

After decades of feuding that has included pay disputes, movie delays, a cancelled 7th season and third film and even the tragic death of Cattrall’s older brother, somehow HBO has managed to convince Cattrall to appear in a very limited capacity. Supposedly filmed on a soundstage in New York on March 22nd, the scene was kept so under wraps that Cattrall’s name didn’t even appear on the call sheet for the day. In the sequence, it is reported that Cattrall’s iconic Samantha Jones is on the phone with everyone’s favourite ‘Sexual Anthropologist’ Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker).

What they’re discussing remains a secret, but it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to assume it has something to do with Jones returning to New York after moving to London. For those in need of a reminder, Samantha’s absence from the first series of AJLT was excused by the character’s relocation to London after a business dispute with Carrie. When art imitates life, am I right?

For anyone who loves Sex and the City, it is common knowledge that Parker and Cattrall are not exactly each other’s biggest fans, however, this is reportedly a non-issue in the case of the cameo. Filmed without any of the other women (namely Davis and Nixon) and without showrunner and writer Michael Patrick King present, it would look as though the women have managed to maintain their distance whilst still offering fans what they have longed for: Samantha’s return.

What any of this means for the future of the series is dependent on a number of factors, the most obvious of these being the ability these women may or may not have to put their pasts behind them. The public disputes, and primarily Cattrall’s comments, definitely remain embedded in our cultural memory – but could an onscreen reunion in a potential third series of AJLT be on the cards?

Tune into the second series of And Just Like That…, premiering on June 22nd, to find out.
