While you might not have heard about BROKENHEARTSCLUB, you probably have already bumped into Harvey Whyte & ONUR’s solo projects. Pianist and producer Whyte aim to express his feelings on his life experience through his music. With Night Dreams EP already out in the world, the “rap Cobain” launched the Hackney-based label studio117 showcasing the UK’s latest alternative RnB talent with singles featuring KeepVibesNear, Sophie DeMasi, Gwadalean, Dapavell, Liv East, Sukaina Yasin, Killa Yan, Steeve Sam, and Knytro. The ironic and multi-genre mind of ONUR keeps gifting the music world with his unique texture jumping from RnB to Turkish pop found in tracks like ‘Beautiful Time,’ ‘What U Do,’ and ‘Ölüm Gelene Kadar Yüzüm Kanadi’.
The Indiependent asked BHC a few questions to discover the details behind their production and ‘Party Started’ music video.
The Indiependent: Where does BROKENHEARTSCLUB come from?
Onur: I had recently been signed to a record label but I didn’t have a good experience with them, and I wanted to start a boyband with like-minded people. I wanted to collect characters almost completely opposing each other, and make something cool and new!
The Indiependent: Lockdowns inspired people to get crafty and creative in many different ways as a response to feelings of isolation and loneliness. BHC’s debut single ‘Party Started’ is an anthem to rejoice after losing so much time at home; was this project pursued during that period? If so, how did this affect its production?
Onur: ‘Party Started’ started nearer to the end of the pandemic, but it definitely affected the music and everything in between. I was in Istanbul at the time and, inspired by all the sounds and vibes of the city, I started to record a lot of street performers. So that Turkish clarinet sample in the track was how it actually got started. I wanted a Beastie Boys kind of vibe to it, something a bit more aggressive.
The Indiependent: Please tell us a little more about the making of ‘Party Started’ music video. We can tell you and Nuff Hungry had a blast shooting it. Where was it filmed? Were BHC friends involved in it?
Harvey: Party Started was filmed at TRC, a local venue and studio space well known in Hackney for many years. We decided to go with Nuff Hungry because of his unique gritty visual style. We invited over a bunch of very talented tattoo artists and friends of BROKENHEARTSCLUB; all of them pulled up perfectly styled and participated in the majority of the scenes to make it the lit visual that you see today!
The Indiependent: Should we expect a whole new EP from BROKENHEARTSCLUB? Are you planning to experiment with other sounds and genres?
Onur: Harv and I are from the opposite ends of London. He’s from East and I’m from West. We’re both so different and the music slaps just way harder because of it! Our influences are totally different too. So yeah, it’s a proper concoction.
Harvey: We experiment with a variety of genres as Onur’s influences and my own are fairly different. Watch this space!
The Indiependent: How does it feel to have ‘Party Started’ finally out?
Harvey: It feels amazing to have the single out and see the reception that it’s getting. It’s our first release but there are so many more to come!
