Surph // Rustie

Electronic music had figured frequently throughout my life with my Dad dabbling in his fair share of Ministry of Sound compilations (pretty tragic) and my sister going through a garage phase back in the early noughties (not so tragic). Rustie’s Glass Swords was the first electronic album I ever bought and ‘Surph’ was the first song I heard from it. This track embraces elements of disco, 80’s electronica and trap music before being smeared in a multicoloured, endorphin laced gloop. Much like the other artists on this list, Rustie acted as a gateway into a scene for me, allowing me to delve into electronic music. This coupled with the clubbing culture that I enjoyed throughout my three years at Brighton University meant that the genre became a permanent fixture in my musical rotation. I now regard Kaytranada, Machinedrum and Bonobo as some of my favourite artists, with this mainly being a result of Rustie’s influence.
