BBC comedy Ghosts is set to end with its upcoming fifth series. As filming on the upcoming series came to end this week, the creative team of Mathew Baynton, Simon Farnaby, Martha Howe-Douglas, Jim Howick, Laurence Rickard and Ben Willbond issued a statement on Twitter to announce their decision to end the show.

The statement read: “After five incredible years haunting the halls of Button House, we have decided that the time is right to let our beloved sitcom Ghosts rest in peace. We have just wrapped filming on our fifth and final series and we can’t wait to share it with you all later this year.” The statement went on to thank the cast and crew and the team at the BBC for their support, as well as fans of the show for watching.

The BBC also released a statement following the news, with the Director of Comedy, John Petrie saying: “We are officially in mourning for the end of this BBC Comedy Classic. We can’t thank the Ghosts team enough for five incredible series (not to mention some perfect Christmas specials), and we can’t wait for BBC viewers to see the final series.”

The final series will see the return of married couple Alison (Charlotte Ritchie) and Mike Cooper (Kiell Smith-Bynoe) as well as the creative team and Lolly Adefope as the motley crew of ghosts haunting Button House.

Ahead of the fifth and final series, the BBC released a short teaser indicating what to expect for Alison, Mike and the ghosts in their last outing, which read: “Following the destruction of their B&B (and main income) in the gatehouse fire, Alison & Mike begin exploring other means of making ends meet and contemplate a new chapter that could have huge effects on the Ghosts’ (after) lives.”

No release date has yet been announced for the fifth and final series, but it is expected to be some time later this year.
