Gaming News: Spider-Man to be a PlayStation Exclusive for Square Enix’s Avengers

The developers behind Square Enix’s Avengers game have just announced a surprising addition to their roster, Spider-Man. But there’s a catch, the character is exclusive to PlayStation.

On August 3rd, just two days after National Spider-Man day, the Crystal Dynamics associate director Jeff Adams posted on the PlayStation Blog announcing that fan favourite superhero Spider-Man will be coming to Marvel’s Avengers sometime next year, but only for PlayStation. Players on Xbox and PC will be unable to play the webhead.

While the addition of the character is certainly a surprise, it being exclusive to PlayStation might not be too much of a shock as Marvel’s Spiderman and Spider-Man: Miles Morales are already exclusives.  It will be interesting to see how much inspiration Crystal Dynamics takes from the wildly popular game from 2018.

In the same blog post, Adams detailed how Crystal Dynamics is trying to make sure the character would play as fans expect. Lead Combat Designer Vince Napoli looks to be in charge of the mechanics of the character and to make sure that Spider-Man is “just as great on the sticks as he is on the page”. As with the rest of the roster of heroes (which is starting to grow steadily), the web-slinger will have multiple skill trees to choose from so all players, of the PlayStation variety, will be able to custom tailor their experience.

Something Crystal Dynamics has been scrutinised for in the past is the style and look of the original roster of characters but is looking like they have already learned their lesson with Spider-Man. Taking inspiration from the iconic comic book look by Steve Ditko and John Romita Sr. the version we may be getting will be closer to his original outing than ever before, webbed pits and all.  As with the rest of the playable characters, there is also sure to be a multitude of alternative looks for Spider-Man if you aren’t a fan of the design,

Unsurprisingly, many Xbox and PC players have been very vocal in their complaints about this announcement with some even threatening to cancel their pre-orders for the game. Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics drew further criticism from fans by announcing in another blog post on August 4th that PlayStation players will be getting even more exclusive content in the form of cosmetic items for each original character at launch. Fortunately, this content will only be exclusive for 30 days.

Spider-Man is the second character set to come to the game post-launch with the first being Hawkeye announced during a War Table Stream on July 29th. With the game set to launch in less than a month on PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 expect more details to be revealed closer to the release date.
