Sony has announced more details about the upcoming release of the PlayStation 5.

Revealing the details in an online presentation, Sony also gave fans a look at some of the titles that are in development for the next-gen console.

First up was the announcement of Final Fantasy XVI. Featuring a medieval setting, fans got a tease of the story and characters that will be in the next instalment of the long-running franchise.

The announcement did cause some confusion among fans, as the closing card stated that while the game would be a PS5 console exclusive, a PC release was also planned. Since the presentation, however, Square Enix has released a statement stating, “We have no further information on if Final Fantasy XVI will be released on platforms other than the PS5.”

Next up was a more in-depth look at Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Set around a year after the previous Spider-Man game, the new story will see Miles will find himself in the middle of a conflict between Roxxon and a faction known as the Underground, led by The Tinkerer.

While Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales will be launching on PlayStation 5, it was also confirmed after the presentation that the game will also be launching in PlayStation 4 as well and that the Ultimate Edition on PlayStation 5 will include a voucher for Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered.

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales is currently scheduled for a Holiday 2020 release.

Along with the in-depth previews, the showcase also featured a number of teaser trailers and reveals:

  • Hogwarts Legacy will put players in the Wizarding World in a new story set 200 years before the book series and will launch in 2021,
  • A new trailer for Resident Evil Village gave fans a preview of the game’s setting and overall story,
  • Deathloop is an action shooter where players must eliminate eight different targets in order to break a recurring time loop and free themselves coming on Q2 2021,
  • Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition will be a digital launch release for the PlayStation 5,
  • Oddworld: Soulstorm brings a new adventure for Abe and is now scheduled to release later this year,
  • A new Five Nights At Freddy’s title, Security Breach, was revealed with an atmospheric cinematic trailer,
  • Several titles from the PlayStation 4 library, including God of War, Detroit Become Human, Uncharted 4 and Days Gone, will be part of a PlayStation Plus Collection for those with an active PS Plus account to download and play on PlayStation 5.
  • Fortnite will release a PlayStation 5 edition, powered by Unreal Engine 4, soon after launch.

Up next was a look at the campaign for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. Featuring gameplay from the opening mission – Nowhere Left to Run – the gameplay trailer took fans to an airfield in Turkey to eliminate a target.

There was also an update about the game’s multiplayer. Players on PlayStation 4 will have access to an exclusive Alpha test of the mode – including the Create-a-Class system – from September 18-20.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is currently set to release on November 13.

Next was a look at the gameplay of the Demon’s Souls remake. Taking players through a fortress style location, players got a glimpse of how the 2009 game will run on PlayStation 5, with the game’s combat system showcased in both travelling combat and a challenging boss fight before revealing a new cinematic trailer.

Demon’s Souls is currently scheduled for a release as a PlayStation exclusive in November 2020.

Then came the most anticipated announcement of the showcase – the release date and pricing of the PlayStation 5 itself.

Rumours of a staggered release proved to be true as Sony announced that the consoles – digital/disc and digital-only – will be released on November 12 in Japan, United States, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand and South Korea followed by the rest of the world on November 19.
