Console Three: The Sony PlayStation 2

Years of Production: 2000 – 2013, Final Game: Pro Evolution Soccer 2014

As one of the most successful gaming platforms of all time, the Sony PlayStation 2 saw nothing short of an abundance of game releases. Many were popular and the final game for the PS2 released in Europe was the football focused Pro Evolution Soccer 2014 (2013) – the 13th entry in Konami’s soccer series and also the main rival of the FIFA franchise.

Was the game considered good? It would seem the reviewers generally thought so. The flagship versions of the game received an 8.4 from IGN, who claimed Pro Evolution Soccer 2014 was a step forward for the series on the pitch,” and had made “a great foundation for it to build on going forward.” However, it was also thought this release had some obvious shortcomings” and didn’t update itself as much as it could have.

Being an older console by 2013 and beginning to fade away, the PS2 still gave a definite footie experience with Pro Evo 2014, albeit with less visual polish than the then next gen versions of the game. You can buy a copy for your PlayStation 2 should you want to experience this gaming era for yourself. It’s not as cheap as you may expect it to be in 2020 and perhaps not particularly radical, but it has a unique position in gaming history nonetheless. A copy can be purchased here.
