Earlier this month, Paramount announced that their critically acclaimed whodunnit, Knives Out, would be getting its very own sequel. Directed by Rian Johnson, the film was a hit with audiences and even earned itself an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay. A lucky treat for the fans, Johnson shed some more light on the plans for the next film at the Oscar’s red carpet on Sunday.

Knives Out follows an ongoing investigation into the death of the wealthy novelist, Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer). Private investigator Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) has been hired to solve the mystery and considers the large, problematic Thrombey family suspects. Despite an all-star cast, including Avengers Chris Evans, Jamie Lee Curtis (Halloween), and Toni Collette (Hereditary), Johnson has announced only one will be returning in the Knives Out sequel.

He told Variety, “It’s going to be Daniel [Craig] playing Benoit Blanc, the detective. Other than that, all bets are off. It’s a totally new cast.” Therefore, while the mysterious sleuth will be on our screens once again, don’t expect the rest of the Thrombey family to be returning any time soon.

With the news of the brand-new cast, fans of the film took to Twitter to share their hopes; the two favourites being Kelly Marie Tran (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker) and Adam Driver (Marriage Story). Though it is just wishful thinking at the moment since nothing else has yet been confirmed, the fans might be onto something. The same night, Johnson discussed the possibility of working with Kelly Marie Tran again (the two also worked together on Star Wars: The Last Jedi in 2017). He told The New York Times, “I love Kelly! I can’t wait to work with her again, no matter what movie that might be.”

No matter who the cast is, we can assume the next instalment of Knives Out will surely have all the twists and turns as the first, if our original detective is going to have any part in it. It’s too early to say when we’ll finally see the return of him, but we’ll have all the updates for you here at The Indiependent.
