Whilst there were certainly a few predictable awards handed out, such as Parasite deservedly winning Best Foreign Language film and Brad Pitt and Laura Dern earning the Best Supporting Actor and Actress awards respectively, there were still some key surprises.

Few would’ve predicted a sweep of both Best Director and Best Motion Picture- Drama for Sam Mendes’ 1917 and it was a major night for Joaquin Phoenix, who was awarded Best Actor- Drama for Joker ahead of Adam Driver, who seems to be most peoples’ choice frontrunner for his performance in Marriage Story. It was equally a great night for Quentin Tarantino, with Once Upon a Time in Hollywood receiving awards for Best Screenplay and Best Motion Picture- Comedy. Another quite welcome surprise was Taron Egerton winning Best Actor- Musical or Comedy for Rocketman despite facing some stiff competition, which may well see him earn his first Oscar nomination very soon. Amazingly, Martin Scorsese’s gangster epic The Irishman was completely shut out altogether, which is arguably one of the biggest surprises of the night.

The Golden Globe ceremony isn’t always spot on in predicting the Oscars, especially considering some really high-profile snubs this year, so it will certainly be interesting to see how the Oscar nominations look when they’re announced this time next week.
