New York, New York – Charlotte Roszko

Theme From New York, New York [Live At Carnegie Hall, June 2

As someone who has grown up listening to and loving the brilliant music of Frank Sinatra, choosing just one song to write about was a difficult task. Upon listening to some of my all-time favourites, I realised one of them captured my heart the most.

From the first booming big band beat to Sinatra’s flawlessly powerful dulcet tones, New York, New York is Sinatra at its finest. The lyrics capture the essence of growing up in a small town, being mesmerised by the bright lights and big dreams of cities like New York. Sinatra songs always transport me to a comforting world of nostalgia, feeling the same enchantment as I did when I first heard the tracks, but now that I am older and moving off to University, there is something more emotive about this song.

The excitement of making a “brand new start of it”, albeit not in New York, is something that means that I now listen to this song with a new sense of wonder. This song captures the emotion of the true essence of dreaming, and the desire to make it in a big city, leaving the “little town blues” of the past far behind, and it is one of the many reasons why I love this song, and the incredible Frank Sinatra, so dearly.
