Celebrating Bi Visibility Day

Also known as (Celebrate Bisexuality Day, Bisexual Pride Day, CBD, and Bisexual Pride), Bi Visibility Day is all about celebrating and raising awareness of bi+ identities.

As defined by Robyn Ochs, bisexuality is “The potential to be attracted – romantically and/or sexually – to people of more than one sex and/or gender, not necessarily at the same time, not necessarily in the same way, and not necessarily to the same degree.” As a result, the umbrella of bi+ identities is vast: bisexual, pansexual, queer, fluid – these are only a few of the labels encompassed by the term.

However, it is worth noting that labels aren’t for everybody. For some LGBTQ+ people, labels are a way of helping them understand their identity. Living in a society whereby labels are everywhere, finding one that truly describes your experience can be a source of validation, empowerment and community. Conversely, for others, labels may be perceived as being restrictive. Both of these responses are okay and should be accepted by society. Awareness days function to draw attention to the spectrum of sexualities out there, thus making these labels more widely known.

Here at The Indiependent, we asked some of our contributors to help us celebrate Bi Visibility. This is what they had to say.
