Netflix is creating an animated series of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World with the original cast set to reprise their roles. The 2010 action romance, directed by Edgar Wright, was based on a graphic novel series by Bryan Lee O’Malley. The film is now considered a cult classic and has received over 70 awards and nominations.
The film follows the titular character, Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera), as he battles to defeat the “seven evil exes” of his girlfriend, Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), whilst attempting to secure a record deal for his band, Sex Bob-Omb.
Both Cera and Winstead will return as voice actors for the series, alongside Kieran Culkin as Wallace Wells, Brie Larson as Envy Adams, Anna Kendrick as Stacey Pilgrim, Alison Pill as Kim Pine, Aubrey Plaza as Julie Powers, Ellen Wong as Knives Chau, Johnny Simmons as Young Neil and Mark Webber as Stephen Stills. Satya Bhabha, Chris Evans, Brandon Routh, Mae Whitman and Jason Schwartzman will also return as the League of Evil Exes.
The cast was announced by Netflix with a minute-long video, that ends with a video-game-style loading sign. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World was highly praised for its graphics and dedication to crafting a movie that felt like a video game. It looks like the animated series will be continuing this trend. Edgar Wright is also well-known for his stellar directing, creative usage of match cuts, and humorous transitions – all of which should be even more effective in an animated format.
The show will be computer-animated by the Japanese animation studio Science SARU and Edgar Wright will return as executive director. Bryan Lee O’Malley will also return as executive producer and writer.
Currently, there has yet to be a release date or information about the animation style for the series. However, a full-cast reprisal is phenomenal, considering the stacked cast of the 2010 film.
