After a three-year hiatus, the eagerly anticipated sixth series of Black Mirror is set to return to Netflix.

The dystopian sci-fi anthology, created by Charlie Brooker, is renowned for its eerie depictions of a modern world consumed by futuristic technology. Each episode has its own unique cautionary tales, constantly playing with the viewers’ expectations and perceptions surrounding prevalent social issues.

The most recent series, which premiered back in June 2019, set a strong precedent featuring high profile actors such as Miley Cyrus, Anthony Mackie and Andrew Scott. While series 5 consisted of only three episodes, Variety reports that series 6 will not only have more instalments but will also be “more cinematic in scope.”

It’s safe to say that fans have been readily awaiting the show’s return, especially when considering Brooker’s previous uncertainties for its future at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. He told the Radio Times magazine back in 2020 how the show’s content might not have been suitable: “At the moment, I don’t know what stomach there would be for stories about societies falling apart, so I’m not working away on one of those… I’m sort of keen to revisit my comic skill set, so I’ve been writing scripts aimed at making myself laugh.”

An additional reason for the delay in production may have been due to Brooker and creative partner Annabel Jones establishing a new production company, Broke and Bones. Despite leaving their production company House of Tomorrow in January 2020, the rights to Black Mirror remained with the parent company Endemol Shine Group. This consequently inhibited Brooker and Jones from producing any more seasons for Netflix. However, they eventually came to an agreement with rights holder Banijay to license the show to Netflix. As such, they are now planning to make a return for series 6.

Casting information and specific story details are yet to be confirmed.
