Rebel Rebel (From Diamond Dogs – 1974)

To me, like many other people, Bowie was an absolute idol. I was introduced to Bowie at a young age, and instantaneously fell in love with the surreal, artsy, sexy and ultimately weird man and the music. Hearing the news of Bowie’s death was devastating. Like many, I sort of always assumed he was immortal, as if he was exempt from nature, because after all, Bowie was otherworldly and defied nature. It’s impossible to choose a favourite Bowie song; his career was so extensive, as is his discography. There’s a Bowie song for every situation.

However, the first song that I turned to after hearing the news was ‘Rebel Rebel’. So it seems apt to choose Rebel Rebel. Rebel Rebel is the song that I always put on when I’m bored, and without fail, it always makes me dance. From the moment the guitar begins the song is the perfect song to dance around to, and when Bowie’s voice comes in, the song gets bigger, and greater. My favourite part of Rebel Rebel is “we like dancing and we look divine” which, in a way sums up Bowie. It’s hard to put into words how much I love this song, it’s just got everything a song needs, great guitar, brilliant lyrics, a great voice, and it’s the exact kind of song you just can’t be sad when listening to, ‘cos all you should do is have a little dance. May the true, creative genius that is Bowie rest in peace. Thank you for the inspiration, and for giving us a platform to embrace the weird inside of us without fear.
