Bergman Island

The first trailer for the highly anticipated Bergman Island, directed by Mia Hansen-Løve, has been released. The film will premiere at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival.

Filming began back in 2018 on the island Fårö in Sweden and boasts a cast exuding with talent. Vicky Krieps and Tim Roth star as our leading pair, alongside Mia Wasikowska, Anders Danielsen Lie, Joel Spira, and Clara Strauch.

Hansen-Løve, whose other works include Things to Come and Maya, has both written and directed the film.

Bergman Island sees a filmmaking couple travel to the island for the summer to each write screenplays for their respective new films, hoping to find inspiration in the same place that inspired the legendary Ingmar Bergman. As they progress with their work, fiction and real life start to come together against the dreamlike backdrop of the island’s natural beauty.

As the trailer ensues, we are enveloped in the idyllic splendour of the island Fårö in Sweden. Yet apart from pleasant scenery, more exact plot details are still difficult to discern, and Hansen-Løve hasn’t been elaborating much on the film’s content. In a previous interview with IndieWire, she spoke about the meta-cinema discourse that will be present in her upcoming work. “There’s a film within a film. It’s complicated,” the director teased.

Although Hansen-Løve may be hesitant to reveal an in-depth synopsis, she shows a great nostalgia over the setting, going on to say that she is “excited to go back to Fårö. I love being there so much. It’s like I’m addicted to that place. I’ve been going there several times a year since 2014. So for me it’s about finishing this film, but also actually just going back to where we’re shooting it.”

Whilst this trailer might only mildly whet the appetites of cinema fans, Bergman Island is already subject to a lot of hype due to it being a contender for the coveted Palme d’Or. This release will also mark the first time Hansen-Løve has competed at the Cannes Film Festival. As more details emerge, we’ll soon see whether this film will warrant such prestigious recognition.
