Hit sitcom Outnumbered originally ran for five seasons from 2007 to 2014. Starring Hugh Dennis and Claire Skinner as middle-class couple Pete and Sue Brockman, the series saw the parents trying to juggle family life and the mishaps of their three children; Jake (Tyger Drew-Honey), Ben (Daniel Roche), and Karen (Ramona Marquez).
The reunion will be written and directed by the show’s creators, Guy Jenkin and Andy Hamilton. Viewers can expect to see Pete and Sue in a downsized home trying to get their now-adult children (and one grandchild) to come together for a traditional family Christmas.
Dennis said that he “can’t wait for the Brockmans to be back together again,”, promising that even though the children are all grown up, “family life will prove to be just as chaotic as ever.”
The reunion will be the first time we will see Dennis and Skinner as Pete and Sue since they confirmed their off-screen relationship in 2018.
The semi-improvised scripting of the sitcom garnered both critical acclaim and loyal viewership, winning Best Comedy at the National Television Awards in 2012.
The adult actors learned the scripts, whilst the children would be given last-minute outlines of the scene. This technique of having the young actors say lines in their own words was implemented to give the show a more authentic feel and recreate the way children actually speak.
It will also be the first time viewers have seen the Brockman family since a Christmas special in 2016. The episode saw the Brockmans on their way to scatter Grandad’s ashes, but are forced to take refuge in a pub after a car accident.
David Ryall, who played Sue’s father Frank in the first two seasons, passed away in 2014, aged 79. The episode was dedicated to his memory.
The Christmas special was also one of the first TV roles for Normal People star Daisy Edgar-Jones, who portrayed Jake’s girlfriend, Kate.
