Baldur’s Gate 3 has performed impressively at the 20th BAFTA Game Awards 2024, winning the award for Best Game. It has become the first game to win all five major Game of the Year awards (or the equivalent), also snagging the title at The Game Awards, Golden Joysticks, DICE and Game Developers Choice.
Other games have come close to a clean sweep in previous years, including The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (2017), God of War (2018) and Elden Ring (2022).
Larian Studios released Baldur’s Gate 3 back in August 2023. It is the third instalment of the Baldur’s Gate series, based on Dungeons and Dragons.
Despite its enormous commercial and critical success, the studio has recently announced that it is moving on from the game and they will not be making any DLC or sequels. Director of Publishing Michael Douse confirmed Larian’s departure from the series on X/Twitter, whilst CEO Swen Vincke has stated: “We want to do big, new things. We don’t want to rehash the thing that we’ve done already.” The popular Role Playing Game won five categories at the BAFTA Awards. This included Best Game, Music, Narrative and EE Player’s Choice. Andrew Wilcott also won Best Performer in a Supporting Role for his role as Raphael.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder and Alan Wake 2 followed closely behind, each winning two awards. Nintendo’s popular release The Legend of Zelda: Tears of The Kingdom also won an award for Technical Achievement.
