The Golden Globe Awards are behind us and next up is the BAFTAs. In about a month’s time, the awards ceremony will take place, with this year’s nominations having just been announced.
This has been another emphatic year for film and television. Everything Everywhere All at Once and The Banshees of Inisherin enjoyed a highly-decorated evening at the Golden Globes and that may well be repeated when the BAFTA nominations are considered.
Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis biopic, in which Austin Butler plays the role of the musical legend, has received a lot of praise and that is once again reflected by BAFTA’s nominations. Also featuring regularly is harrowing war film All Quiet on the Western Front.
Outstanding British Film is one of the most fascinating awards up for grabs next month at the BAFTAs. One of the favourites is Aftersun, in which Paul Mescal maturely followed up his Normal People success. Also in this category are Sam Mendes’ Empire of Light, murder mystery See How They Run and Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical, which featured the likes of Stephen Graham and Lashana Lynch.
EE’s Rising Star Award has previously been won by a wide array of excellent names, including James McAvoy, Micheal Ward, Kristen Stewart, Tom Holland and most recently, the aforementioned Lashana Lynch.
In the mix this time around is Naomi Ackie, who played the sensational Whitney Houston in biopic I Wanna Dance With Somebody, as well as Sex Education‘s Emma Mackey and Aimee Lou Wood. They may both have risen to fame from the hit Netflix series, but they made an impact in the film industry this year playing major roles in Emily and Living respectively.
On the theme of individual awards, the Leading Actor and Leading Actress categories are as strong as ever. Hollywood stalwarts Viola Davis and Emma Thompson are up for the latter for their roles in The Woman King and Good Luck to You, Leo Grande with Cate Blanchett (Tár), Danielle Deadwyler (Till), Ana de Armas (Blonde) and of course Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All at Once) all in the mix too.
On to the Leading Actor award and once again there is a refreshing mix of youth and experience. Austin Butler and Paul Mescal for their previously mentioned roles are nominated, as is Irishman Daryl McCormack. Taking up the baton for the veterans there is Brendan Fraser (The Whale), Colin Farrell (The Banshees of Inisherin) and Bill Nighy (Living).
There are many stars from both in front of and behind the camera in with a shot of winning an award. Below are some of the BAFTA film nominations in the major categories:
