The legendary comics of Neighbours (2014), Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne, are returning to entertain us this year with Platonic, with Apple TV+ recently unveiling the premiere date and our first look at the series. The upcoming ten-episode comedy series stars and is executively produced by Rose Byrne and Seth Rogen, and created, directed, and written by Nick Stoller (known for The Muppets) and Francesca Delbanco (known for Forgetting Sarah Marshall)—with the pair previously working together on Friends from College. The half-hour comedy will make its global debut with the first three episodes on May 24 2023, on Apple TV+, followed by new episodes weekly every Wednesday until July 12 2023.
As of now, there is currently no trailer launched for Platonic. However, the plot synopsis might just be enough to convince potential fans to add it to their watch list. Platonic will follow “a platonic pair of former best friends approaching midlife (Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne) who reconnect after a long rift. The duo’s friendship becomes all-consuming—and destabilises their lives in a hilarious way.” This blurb, however brief, promises the full dose of humour that looks like the ideal setting for Rose Byrne and Seth Rogen’s comedic skills to take centre stage.
It’s hard to envision any modern comedy-drama project without Seth Rogen these days. The actor has experienced a meteoric rise to the top. From his first audition for The Office to becoming one of the most notable performers and executive producers, Rogen’s grown a fan base in support of his seemingly endless stream of projects (most recently garnering producing credits in The Boys and Invincible).
Things have also been booming for the award-winning Australian actress Rose Byrne. Since her first lead role in The Goddess of 1967, which gained her well-deserved recognition and helped her make the crossover to Hollywood, she has successfully carved out a career for herself as a comedic actor with successful forays into dramas and thrillers, appearing in several commercially successful productions (from Bridesmaid to Mrs. America). Combining their acting superpowers, comic chops and clever timings, this rom-com series will likely bring out their dynamic chemistry on-screen, all whilst becoming more mature in their themes and character style.
Joining Rogen and Byrne in the main cast are the likes of Luke Macfarlane who plays Charlie, Tre Hale who plays Andy, Carla Gallo who plays Katie, and Andrew Lopez who plays Reggie. Also appearing in recurring supporting roles are the likes of Alisha Wainwright who plays Audrey, Guy Branum who plays Stewart, Janet Varney who plays Vanessa and Vinny Thomas who plays Omar.
The series marks the latest collaboration between Apple TV+ and Byrne, who also stars in the critically lauded Apple Original series Physical, which premieres its third season later this year. Rogen will also star in an upcoming, untitled comedy series for Apple TV+ that he will write, direct and executive produce alongside Evan Goldberg.
All things considered, the upcoming show Platonic will undoubtedly gain attention and amass a fan following, as it promises to be one of the most exciting shows coming on Apple TV+ this year.
