Steven Soderbergh’s upcoming crime thriller No Sudden Move has just began production, with filming taking place in Detroit under strict Covid-19 safety protocols.

The film is being produced under Soderbergh’s recent three-year overall deal with HBO Max.

No Sudden Move boasts an all-star ensemble including Benicio Del Toro (Sicario), David Harbour (Stranger Things), Don Cheadle (Black Monday), Jon Hamm (Mad Men), Amy Seimetz (The Comey Rule), Ray Liotta (The Many Saints of Newark), Kieran Culkin (Succession), Brendan Fraser (Doom Patrol), Noah Jupe (Honey Boy), Bill Duke (Black Lightning), Frankie Shaw (SMILF) and Julia Fox (Uncut Gems).

Whilst no specific roles are known as of yet, the story is reported to be set in 1955 Detroit where a group of small-time criminals are hired to steal what they believe is just a simple document. When their plan goes awry, the group are then led on a journey deep into the race-torn, rapidly changing city to search for answers as to who hired them—and why they were chosen.

Written by Ed Solomon, this film will mark his third collaboration with Soderbergh, following recent release Bill & Ted Face The Music and HBO limited series and interactive app Mosaic. Solomon has previously worked on blockbusters including Men In Black, X-Men and Charlie’s Angels. Casey Silver will produce the film, which reportedly has a production crew of 150 people, 90% of whom were local hires.

Soderbergh said: “the last time I shot a movie in Detroit with a great script and a great cast things worked out really well, so I’m very excited behind my mask right now.” The Oscar-winning director also has another film launching on HBO Max later this year. Let Them All Talk stars Meryl Streep as a celebrated author who takes a trip with some old friends. Gemma Chan, Dianne Wiest and Lucas Hedges also star.

Casey Bloys, Chief Content Officer for HBO and HBO Max, stated: “it’s a pleasure to begin production on another project with Steven Soderbergh, Casey Silver and Ed Solomon. We have an incredible partner in Warner Bros. Pictures and an extraordinarily talented cast – we couldn’t be happier to bring No Sudden Move to HBO Max.”
