Album: Lemonade

Artist: Beyonce

Released: April 23

Lemonade was an unexpected surprise that took the music world by storm. An album that that was as innovative in substance as it was with style, Beyonce’s visual album was a long overdue celebration not only of femininity, but black femininity.

Featuring cameos from the likes of Jack White, Lemonade was genre-defying in more ways than one. Combining rock with R’n’B with fuck soul with blues, it was an album that only Beyonce herself could pull off.

However, ultimately, it’s the album’s visual aspects that is what makes this an album not only of the year, but the decade. In a year where the Black Lives Matter movement has gained full force, Beyonce’s embracement of black culture made the perfect statement of empowerment at a time where the world seems that little bit more on edge.
