A new international trailer for the A24 horror film Lamb has been released.
The thriller sees a childless couple living in rural Iceland make a discovery inside their sheep barn. They soon face the consequences of defying the will of nature.
A24 acquired full Northern American distribution rights earlier this month, setting the release for later in the year.
Lamb is the directorial feature debut for Valdimar Jóhannsson who directed the 2008 short Harmsaga prior to working on this film. Jóhannsson is best known for his special effects work on films such as Oblivion, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and Prometheus.
“For me, this film is about loss and how much this couple is willing to do to try and recapture the happiness they had before, to make their life bearable,” Jóhannsson said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
Swedish actor Noomi Rapace, best known for her work in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Prometheus, is among the cast. Other cast members include Icelandic actors Björn Hlynur Haraldsson and Hilmir Snær Guðnason.
The film marks a return to Iceland for Rapace, who grew up and began her career in the country. Her film debut came in the 1988 Icelandic historical feature In the Shadow of the Raven.
“A script like this is rare and I directly felt that I had to do it. I’ve never done anything like this before, I can’t wait to start filming and go back to my roots in Iceland,” Rapace told Variety in 2019.
Lamb premieres on 13 July as part of the Un Certain Regard competitive sidebar in the 2021 Cannes Film Festival. It will début alongside Noche De Fuego by Tatiana Huezo of Mexico and Commitment Hasan by Semih Kaplanoglu of Turkey.
The festival began on 6 July with Leos Carax’s Annette, which stars Adam Driver, opening the event.
