Amie Bailey: Hello, I Love You from Waiting For The Sun (1968)
Of the twenty-one singles The Doors released over sixteen years, ‘Hello, I Love You’ was their sixth and undoubtedly one of their most popular. The track was one of only two US number ones earned by the rock band, the other being ‘Light My Fire’. Forty seven years after its original release, it’s still very easy to see where the popularity of the track came from. The repetitive, playful lyrics are insatiably catchy whilst the almost electronic, instrumental melody is not only fun, but most definitely has a foot-tapping beat. Listening now, Jim Morrison’s distinctive baritone vocals are – as always – unique but warmly familiar, but especially so in a track that has remained so popular for so long. ‘Hello, I Love You’ is the perfect example of two things that don’t always go hand in hand; a single that is hugely commercially popular whilst genuinely being one of the artist’s best tracks. Catchy, effervescent and timeless, ‘Hello, I Love You’ is one of the most memorable and loveable songs of the 20th century.
