It seems that psych rock is coming back in a big way – and rightfully so. Here are five tracks to give you a taste of the sub genre that never really went away, but still deserves a second chance to take the spotlight.

Modern psychedelic heroes Tame Impala released this as part of 2010’s Innerspeaker, and was written, recorded, and produced at Kevin Parker’s home studio. ‘Half Full Glass Of Wine’ showcases the band’s technical prowess, and sets an example on how to make a simple song interesting through the use of layers and offbeat rhythms.

It’s uptight opening riff promptly surges into a big, boomy, underlying groove which perfectly compliments Kevin’s spacey lyrics and fuzzy guitar tones. The ever-so-slightly detached drum rhythm gives the rest of the instruments room to breathe, resulting in a huge overall sound. The first chorus shakes up the song’s feel completely where thereon the drums and guitar riff about, and the song starts to launch into it’s anticipation filled psychy outro.

‘Half Full Glass of Wine’ is the perfect introduction to modern psych rock. It’s simple, yet the offbeat elements shake up the track to keep things interesting. A song by Pond perfectly compliments this track, which is mentioned later on in this article.
