4. Serpent Power

Their band may be new, but its band members are long-established music veterans. Half a “supergroup” of sorts joining the forces of Ian Skelly of The Coral and Paul Molloy of The Zutons, Serpent Power is a psychedelic-rock music collaboration formed in 2014 after Skelly and Molloy discovered an instant partnership at an aftershow party on Merseyside. The songwriting chemistry brought them to Castle Grayskull studios shortly after, where they immediately began recording their debut album.

Serpent Power’s self-titled full-length effort, released May 2015, combines the wonderful and the weird, the bizarre and the baroque into a marriage of funk rock, new wave shoegaze and psychedelia. With songs that revolve around themes of alien brain abduction, voodoo witchdoctors, and phantom bogeymen, Serpent Power are Liverpool’s brilliant answer to The Flaming Lips; just as interesting, and just as strange.
