Let’s be honest, it’s not that often you see female fronted bands making it in the big time. However, there has been a recent surge in the number of females fronting their own groups. Take Haim for instance – many gigs and a debut album later and it feels like everyone is listening to them. And let’s not forget Florence + the Machine – she is, without a doubt, in a league of her own (a league that is, of course, swirled with glitter and flowers). Here, The Indiependent chooses 5 of the best upcoming female-fronted bands.
5. Bang Bang Romeo
Lead by Anastasia Walker and hailing from Sheffield, Bang Bang Romeo are a rock and roll band that wear their influences on their sleeves. Each song is steeped in 60’s nostalgia, drawing influence from Fleetwood Mac to The Beatles. Walker herself is a powerful presence on stage – her vocals are loud, effortless, and combine effectively with the band’s jagged guitar parts. Think of a rocky, more tarnished Florence Welch and you’ve got somewhere near to Bang Bang Romeo’s incredible frontwoman. I recently saw the band when they supported Blossoms, and despite being the first act on stage with only a small crowd to perform to, they gave everything they had. Walker was witty, engaging and an amazing performer. Definitely ones to watch.
