Nominees for the 94th Academy Awards have been announced today, with Dune And The Power Of The Dog receiving double-digit nominations.

Jane Campion’s The Power Of The Dog dominated nominations receiving 12 in total and following close behind was Dune, which received ten nominations.

West Side Story and Belfast were locked in a dead heat, both being nominated seven times each.

In some categories many of the four films (or even all four) are named, which will make for an interesting award ceremony as viewers watch the battle unfold later this year.

King Richard was close behind West Side Story and Belfast minus one nomination, being listed in six of the 23 categories. Don’t Look Up, Nightmare Alley and Drive My Car were each nominated in four categories.

Some films that didn’t receive as much recognition as they might have hoped for, including House Of Gucci. The film was only nominated once, featuring in the makeup and hairstyling category. Lady Gaga was nowhere to be found in the actress award line-up.

However, Robin Robin creators Dan Ojari and Mikey Please celebrated the film’s one nomination in the short film (animated) category in an interview with the BBC shortly after the announcement.

Some nominees, like West Side Story‘s Ariana DeBose, have taken to social media to celebrate.

Nominations were announced in Los Angeles by hosts Tracee Ellis Ross and Leslie Jordan, who enjoyed playful banter and discussing Jordan’s outfit choices throughout the announcements. Both occasionally struggled with creators’ names, which has been picked up by publications.

In addition to Tracee and Leslie, eager film-loving healthcare workers and students announced some categories.

The award ceremony will be hosted by Dolby Theatre at the Hollywood & Highland Center on Sunday 27 March and will honour films that made their US debut in 2021.

A host for March’s ceremony is still to be announced, with much speculation about who will take the spot. There is assurance at least that there will indeed be a physical host this year.
