4. Adventureland
Having recently graduated from college, James Brennan (Jesse Eisenberg) can’t wait to head to the other side of the pond and explore Europe. When his travelling plans come to a disappointing halt as the result of his parents’ lack of financial backing, Brennan takes up a job at a local amusement park and resigns himself to the Worst. Summer. Ever.
That is, until he realises his job isn’t so bad after all, upon finding himself working alongside Kristen Stewart’s character, Em. She makes him laugh and the summer slowly starts to be enjoyable after all… sounds too good to be true, right? Well, yeah. Naturally, it wouldn’t be a rom com without some sort of complication interfering with happy-ever-after, but I’ll leave it to you to find out what happens.
A bittersweet tale about true love and all the messy, heart-wrenching bits in between, Adventureland was the film which converted me to being a fan of rom coms. With no Rachel McAdams to be seen, there’s plenty of gags and enough grit to capture even the most cynical of girlfriend/boyfriend’s attention.
If you find yourself with time to kill once all your exams are behind you, Adventureland is a great movie to stick on.
