Will Poulter has joined the all-star cast of James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in the role of artificial ‘perfect human’ Adam Warlock.
Rumours began swirling on social media after Deadline reported that Poulter had been cast in the upcoming Guardians movie.
Director James Gunn then confirmed the news on Twitter, adding “As you guys know I often strike down false rumors, so… um…Welcome to the Guardians family, Will Poulter.”
“He’s an amazing actor and wonderful guy. See you in a couple weeks.”
The British actor is best known for his roles in We’re the Millers, The Maze Runner, Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, and the folk horror film Midsommar.
Adam Warlock has previously been teased in the mid-credits scene of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, where Ayesha (Elizabeth Debicki), High Priestess of the Sovereign, planned to destroy the Guardians using a powerful being who she named “Adam”.
In the Marvel comics, the character is created by a group of scientists called the Enclave and is an all-powerful being whose abilities include immortality, flight, and superhuman strength.
Poulter will join the star-studded cast of Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Karen Gillan, and Pom Klementieff for the Guardian’s third outing. The plot for the long-awaited film remains unknown, with production reported to be starting next month.
Gunn has been responding to fan theories about Vol. 3 on Twitter, teasing the potential fate of some of the beloved characters.
The Guardians will return to our screens in various projects in the coming years, with the first being a role in the upcoming film Thor: Love and Thunder, set to be released on May 6, 2022.
Marvel has also announced a Guardians Disney Plus holiday special, set to air Christmas 2022.
Gunn has already begun teasing this festive special, adding: “In my incredibly subjective & admittedly often odd opinion, we’ll be introducing one of the greatest MCU characters of all time.”
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is set to release May 5, 2023.
