DEEP BLUE SOMETHING – Josey
The Texan titans, led by the Pipes brothers, struck gold with the jangle-pop joy of ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’. However, most of their back catalogue was more of a blend of moody Cure-isms and bass-driven folk – finding a worthy follow-up proved difficult. ‘Josey’ was the closest, a mid-paced meander which told a curious tale of going for a HIV test (and passing, thankfully). The breakfasts soon dried up.
UK chart placing: 27 Indiependent rating: 6/10
Good or bad: ‘Josey’ lacks a killer hook, a problem which meant DBS have been forever resigned to one-hit wonder status, but on its own terms it has a certain bucolic charm.
