Whaleys Stages have compiled a list of the top ten most Instagrammed theatres in the world, with three UK venues making it onto the list..

The company analysed the most frequently used hashtags for theatre venues on the social media platform. Concert hall venues that traditionally only host music performances have been excluded, meaning that the final list only includes venues more traditionally associated with forms of theatre.

According to the poll, the Sydney Opera House is the most popular theatrical venue on Instagram with over 923,000 hashtag mentions. It is followed by the Royal Albert Hall, described by Whaleys Stages as “one of the UK’s most treasured and distinctive buildings.” The venue was mentioned over 332,000 times.

The Radio City Music Hall in New York and the Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado are third and fourth respectively, followed by another London venue, Alexandra Palace.

Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires and the Royal Opera House in London are in sixth and seventh. The Teatro alla Scala in Milan, the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, and the Teatro Amazonas in Manaus round off the list.

In a statement, Whaley Stages said that “through the findings… [we] aim to inspire future theatre trips and encourage even more striking Instagram posts.

“Theatres, and arts venues in general, have been hard-hit by the coronavirus pandemic, with many venues in the UK having been closed for over a year. It’s therefore never been more important to encourage visitors to these venues.”
