TV Review: Tome-Wan S2E12 // Hannibal

“I am enchanted and terrified.”

After a lengthy flirtation with Dr. Lecter and Will Graham, it seems like Mason Verger may have bitten off more than he can chew.

In what could perhaps be described as the most visually disturbing episode of the show’s two series so far, we witness Will’s deepest darkest fantasies come to light when Hannibal urges him to envisage how he would go about bringing the doctor’s gruesome reign to an end. But the real star of this week’s episode is Mason Verger.

After being drugged by the twisted therapist – an experience which Mason seems to enjoy slightly too much – and consequently instructed to measure the fat on himself, the heir to the infamous Verger dynasty finds himself in a nail-biting (or should we say nose-biting) situation that ends rather badly for all involved.

Gillian Anderson makes a surprise appearance as Dr. Bedelia Du Maurier, Hannibal’s therapist. Long-awaited questions about her deadly run-in with a former patient are finally answered, but not everything is quite as it seems.

Despite this week’s episode being so dark and disturbing, the creators manage to counter balance the heightened violence within through the use of clever puns (a favourite this week from Mason Verger himself) that leave you pining for more. With the finale awaiting us next week, our hunger is sure to be satisfied.
