Sun and sea-monsters abound in the first trailer for Luca, which has been hotly anticipated since announced in July.
Luca is set in the beautiful seaside town of Riviera, Italy, where 13-year-old Luca Paguro lives with his friend Alberto Scorfano. In addition to enjoying a life of leisurely adventures, the two have to disguise the fact that they are sea monsters—in a town which happens to hate creatures like them.
The film is directed by Enrico Casarosa, who also directed the Pixar short La Luna. Back in July, when the film was first announced, Casarosa said: “This is a deeply personal story for me, not only because it’s set on the Italian Riviera where I grew up, but because at the core of this film is a celebration of friendship. Childhood friendships often set the course of who we want to become, and it is those bonds that are at the heart of our story in Luca. So in addition to the beauty and charm of the Italian seaside, our film will feature an unforgettable summer adventure that will fundamentally change Luca.”
Pixar released two films last year, Onward and Soul. Onward got a limited theatre run just before the start of the pandemic back in February, while Soul was released on Disney+ on Christmas Day. It is not yet known whether Luca will stream online or have a theatrical release.
Luca will be released on 18 June, 2021.
