Love triangles aren’t a one-time thing for TV’s most chaotic teen protagonist as the season four trailer proves Never Have I Ever‘s Devi Vishwakumar is back for one last hurrah. The Netflix comedy will premier its fourth and and presumably final season on 8 June 2023.
The series follows second-generation Indian-American protagonist Devi Vishwakumar (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan), who’s considered an “Ivy League-chasing horndog from Sherman Oaks, California” (stated by John McEnroe in the voiceover no less), as she navigates love, lust, and loss in her formative years.
A teaser trailer for the fourth series was released on 14 April, and sees Devi and her two best friends, Eleanor (Ramona Young) and Fabiola (Lee Rodriquez), returning to high school for what’s expected to be an eventful senior year. We follow our heroine to prom and graduation, as well as a crammed bar where, in true Devi fashion, the protagonist seemingly toasts herself with “I frickin’ love my future life.”
Previous seasons have seen Devi battle with her feelings for hallway heartthrob Paxton Hall-Yoshida (Darren Barnet) and enemy-turned-lover Ben Gross (Jaren Lewison). Season three ended with the former making a leap to Arizona State University, somewhat confirming the end of Paxton and Devi’s romantic arc. Viewers are left with the assumption that ‘#Bevi’ is on for real this time when Devi shows up to Ben’s door with the famed ‘One Free Boink’ note.
However, the trailer confirms the return of both characters, as well as a third love interest Ethan, who will be portrayed by Michael Cimino. Also confirmed to be returning for the final season are Devi’s uber-strict mother, Nalini Vishwakumar (Poorna Jagannathan), and overachieving cousin Kamala (Richa Moorjani).
The show was created by Mindy Kaling and Lana Fisher in 2020, with Fisher assuming the role of showrunner. It has received acclaim for its unprecedented portrayal of South Asian girlhood. Fisher, in conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, said: “Season four is about growing up and moving on. For these characters, it’s their senior year. Who do they want to be in the world? Hopefully, we send people off into their future lives in a way that feels satisfying to our fans.”
Season 4 of Never Have I Ever will be available for streaming on Netflix on June 8 2023.
