Netflix has released the first full-length trailer for their TV adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s popular graphic novel series, The Sandman

The show is set to make its official premiere on 5 August 2022. As the project was first announced back in 2019, fans of the original source material have been greatly anticipating the show’s release.

The 10-episode drama will star Tom Sturridge as the titular Sandman, better known as Dream. Joining him on screen are Boyd Holbrook, Patton Oswalt, Vivienne Acheampong, Gwendoline Christie, Charles Dance, Jenna Coleman, David Thewlis, Stephen Fry, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Mason Alexander Park, Donna Preston, Vanesu Samunyai (fka Kyo Ra), John Cameron Mitchell, Asim Chaudhry, Sanjeev Bhaskar, Joely Richardson, Niamh Walsh, Sandra James-Young and Razane Jammal.

Netflix’s official synopsis of the series reads: “There is another world that waits for all of us when we close our eyes and sleep — a place called the Dreaming, where The Sandman, Master of Dreams (Sturridge), gives shape to all of our deepest fears and fantasies. But when Dream is unexpectedly captured and held prisoner for a century, his absence sets off a series of events that will change both the dreaming and waking worlds forever.”

Audiences will be transported across different worlds and timelines as Dream tries to fix his past mistakes, coming face to face with both friends and foes along the way. As the trailer ensues, we get small glimpses of some of the obstacles Dream has to overcome. One is a menacing creature called the Corinthian (Boyd Holbrook), who looks like a man with no eyes and the latter Lucifer (Gwendoline Christie) is the devil incarnate.

After its initial debut at the San Diego Comic-Con 2022, attendees also got to watch three exclusive clips from the series. Each clip recreated some of the comics’ most memorable moments from the first volume such as the evil Dr. Dee (David Thewlis) 24-hour takeover of a diner or the surprise wedding where Constantine (Jenna Coleman) is summoned.

Gaiman, who also developed and executively produced the show, shared his enthusiasm for the upcoming adaptation: “This is Sandman being made for people who love Sandman, by people who love Sandman, and that is so incredible for me. It’s been so special. I feel like I’m on the cusp, and I cannot wait until people see this show.”
