Hulu reveals a heart-wrenching exploration of love and loss across the realms with the We Were The Lucky Ones trailer, starring Joey King and Logan Lerman. A title weighted with emotional nuance, the adaptation of Georgia Hunter’s New York Times bestseller is a confronting reminder of a deplorable period in history. The first three episodes will be available on 28 March 2024.

The true story is inspired by Hunter’s own lived experience as it follows the desperate fight for one Jewish family to be reunited in WWII. We Were The Lucky Ones synopsis describes the historical drama as a demonstration of the “human spirit” thriving in “the face of the twentieth century’s darkest moment”.

The show promises an intense depiction of dignity and courage in the face of totalitarian Nazism and the subsequent murder of approximately six million Jewish people. The trailer follows a jovial family dynamic which quickly transforms into the desperation of loved ones separated across continents, with an overarching theme of hope amongst destruction.

King, a nominee in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series category for her role in The Act, stars as Helena. The Perks of Being A Wallflower star Lerman takes to the screen as Addy, Helena’s sibling in Radom, Poland. Also completing the main cast is Hadas Yaron, Henry-Lloyd Hughes, Amit Rahav, Sam Woolf, Michael Aloni, Moran Rosenblatt, Eva Feiler, Lior Ashkenazi and Robin Weigert. King and Lerman have previously worked with Hulu, and meet again after co-starring together in The Bullet Train.

King and Lerman have also discussed a mutual emotional connection to show, in which they felt “compelled” to be involved. This stems from their Jewish heritage and having ancestors who escaped the Holocaust. 78 years after the end of WWII, the upcoming release of the limited series is a poignant reminder to acknowledge the suffering and catastrophic antisemitism of this time in history.

Erica Lipez, writer and co-producer for The Morning Show, is the writer responsible for bringing We Were The Lucky Ones to life, as well as serving as showrunner and executive producer. Thomas Kail and Jennifer Todd also assume executive producer roles whilst directing the show.

We Were The Lucky Ones is set to evoke an emotional resonance of love and tragedy that is sure to leave an indelible mark, which you’ll find on Hulu in the US on 28 March with no official release date for UK audiences.
